Bernie Madoff's ponzi scheme has turned into a really big deal.
But there are still folk that feel deregulating everything is a great idea.
This year especially was a bad year for those that think that businesses and politics can regulate themselves.
But still we got the billion dollar bail out "to save the economy" even though many folk said don't do it, bad idea.
So what will happen to Madoff? Will anyone recoup their losses?
Good luck fixing the cumulative mess Barack, I can't imagine. I truly can't.
Hard to have faith in anyone anymore... People with education or without, poor or wealthy, equally untrustworthy.
Look at so many of our representatives. Politics as usual reeks. No consciences, how do they sleep at night???
RNC released a new anti Obama ad. This is from a link at the RNC's own site. Interesting. We haven't heard the full story and yet there is the ad. So, we're going to do this the whole 4 years are we? He's not even in office. It seems nothing has been done wrong on Obama's side and we don't know what the feds are advising him either. Of course someone from his staff was in touch with the governer of Illinois, he picks the new senator. Duh. American's are sooooo patient.
Such fuss over Hillary's senate seat. Apparently Caroline Kennedy wants it.
So what? She's capable, seems honest, smart, is a good fundraiser and has strong name recognition...
What really ticks me off are these Hillary supporters... you know the ones, those that refused to vote for Obama because he didn't chose her as the VP candidate, even after she asked them to support him.
Those that now are annoyed because Caroline Kennedy went public with her support for Obama over Hillary for presidential nominee. Also Ted Kennedy gave his support to Obama. Gee sorry, that's the way politics goes. Life goes on.
But they say she's not qualified, she's too pedigreed and not political enough.
Give me a break.
Who should we have? Someone like Al Franken, Ted Stevens, Dianne Wilkerson, Fred Thompson, or folk like Spitzer, Palin, Larry Craig or even John Edwards?
Seriously, get over it. I really wanted Hillary to be the first female president, I voted for her in the primary. But she lost because the voters spoke. I was disappointed but wouldn't in a million years have voted for the McCain/Palin ticket because my feelings were hurt. Grow up, you're not helping women seem reasonable and intelligent by being disgruntled sore losers.
If you're against Caroline Kennedy as senator (and I'm not against it, she's better than many of them) make it for a real reason.
And speaking of NY, Gov. Paterson signed a bill that would stop tax free cigarette sales by Indians... Interesting, need revenue?
New Bill on Indian Cigarette Tax

Non political:
If you caught Fall Out Boy on Leno tonight performing Sleigh Bells Ringing it must have made you smile (especially if you like them). I was impressed, it was nice to see a Christmas song that wasn't traditional Tony Bennet.
My mood is slightly better, not a lot mind you, but I guess it's an improvement.
Stressed out, one major gift isn't going to be here for Christmas which sucks because we cut back on the gifting.
Still have to bake and all hell has been breaking loose unexpectedly the last week or so.
UGH. Bah Humbug!
I mean Ho, Ho, Ho Merry Happy Christmas Year Holidays New Hanukkah Season Santa Menorah Tree... Kwanzaa.
And to all a Good Night!

Forty-one days left of GW Bush... or what the *#@&'s wrong with Chicago anyway?
*
So the more we hear and the more Blagojevich says it seems he's arrogant, greedy and a more than a wee bit delusional.
What a mess, Obama and others say he should resign (duh) and he still hasn't. Amazing.
And how about the whole Jesse Jackson Jr. (otherwise known as candidate #5) possibility of involvement.
Great stuff. Wish it was republicans right at the moment but... both parties seem to be unable to remain above board at all times. Bleeping, unbelievable bleepin bleeper. Never heard so many news reporters saying bleep with such relish...
of course we all know bleep actually means bleep, don't we? Struck me funny and even Morning Joe got a joke in on his saying the word live on the air (by accident of course). Bleepin' funny I say.
It really amuses me to hear republicans condemn democrats when they're both full of shit most of the time, no?
We're going to see big changes in the auto industry no matter what happens.
Less choice of cars (brands), less dealerships, don't care if the government bails, um, gives them loans them money or not.
It's interesting that there's so much trouble getting this agreement down in house which just passed, now there's the senate.
Perhaps GW might want to say something... He still is president right? ::sigh::
What's better bailed out or bankruptcy? No guarantee that the companies will succeed even after getting money.
Or that they'll decide they need more $ later on, and then what do we do. Refuse and lose what we've all ready fronted?
Doesn't make me feel any more confident in buying any new cars... think I'll stick to my poor lil manual Toyota Corolla.
I saw the funniest headline on one of those supermarket news rags (not sure which one it was) but it said:
Hillary promises Obama she'll divorce Bill after the inauguration. It was just funny with a picture and all.
Really caught my attention and I started to laugh out loud. Which makes people look askance at you in the checkout line.
I simply pointed at the paper and they kinda smiled and looked at me like I was nuts... aw hell maybe I am, eh?
And ghost of irrelevant people past, well they should be past anyhow: Joe the Plumber showed up dissing John McCain.
Now I'm not a John McCain fan, and I strongly (ahem) disliked Sarah Palin, but just shut up Joe! Nobody cares.
He says he was "appalled" by Sen. McCain while he traveled with the campaign. Really Mr. can't get your story straight plumber? (and yes, I put those good ole air quotes around plumber)
But you loved Sarah Palin cause she was the "real deal." Do you mean the real deal like you are Mr. Wurzrlbacher?
What about the Jay Leno invasion of prime time?
Does this mean Law and Order will be moved and everything else? Golly I'm sorry that NBC isn't doing all that well but damn.
Why do they have to mess with actual tv shows? Screw around with our escapism that we so dearly need right now.
And what's with Jay anyway? He's been saying that he wants to retire, and it seemed that he was.
Then there were the Jay's going over to ABC rumors... Hey, haven't we been here before with late night talk show wars?
Now he's taking the 10pm spot every night. UGH. I don't understand. Why? The 30 million a year you'll get?
Jay all ready has more money than god and could do many things to stay in the limelight including a once a week show if he wanted to but, no, it's every night. Come on Jay seriously reconsider please.
A workaholic and a by all accounts very nice but still a stay in the public eye control freak.
I don't want to watch talk shows in prime time... early to bed folk can tape it.
Britney Spears... the press seems to think she's news. She isn't. One show says she's in the middle of a reinvention and strong comeback. The other says she's on the verge of a nervous breakdown and losing it.
Hey, I vote for both if and only if it gets her out of print and off the NEWS.
Well, nothing more on my mind tonight (at least that I can remember at this point.
I still have more cookies to bake so I'm going to to and then crash in the early morning hours I imagine.
Making coffee and having a piece of pie then back to work for me.
The first batches, almond sugar cookie Christmas trees and semi-sweet chocolate sandwiched between lacy crisp oat wafers.
Now I know the wafers don't look particularly Christmas like but they are my signature cookies and always asked for.

G'night all,
Stay sane... I'm trying.

Sixty-two days left of George W. Bush...
*
Well, McCain actually won in the close election in Missouri.
Hooray!
Obama picked Tom Daschle for Secretary of Health and Human Services.
What's with all the Clinton era picks? Not a bad choice though.
So he'll be the guy that works on health care.
Would be more interesting if Barack Obama gave us his own reasoning behind each of his picks...
He wouldn't of course, but it would be telling to know what he was thinking and why.
To Hillary or not to Hillary... now that IS the question.
Not politics:
Been working with my son on Global History review each night because he needs to pass the regents in January.
It's a two year course. Glad to be able to help but Social Studies isn't my favorite subject.
Learned it fairly well by the time my fourth kid went through school system. Ha.
I love English, Science, Art, Psychology and especially Anthropology.
(I'm a teacher at heart, studied some graduate English thinking I'd be one in the 80's.)
Every once in a while I think about going back to get my English degree because I love English but don't really know what I'd do with it. Have a MSW so unless I come into money I doubt I'll go back to college any time soon.
Though I have to admit I'm the happiest I ever am when I'm in college learning new things and meeting new people.
Don't know why I just am.
My mom has been quite sick for two days and she looks miserable.
Not sure what's wrong but it's not a cold. She's very discouraged.
I'm hoping she feels better soon. She's hard to get to go to the doctors.
::sigh::
This time of year is not my favorite. I get moody in November.
It's been the same pattern for over 30 years.
My best friend died a short time before my birthday.
I put flowers on the grave every year and try to fathom why I'm still here and she isn't.
But anyway, I'm going to bed because I'm really exhausted.
Still not feeling great and mentally weary.
So G'night,
Laura

Nine days to E-Day... Finally we're in the single digits!!!
*
There was good news and bad news this weekend.
First the bad news:
Anne Pressly, anchorwoman for Channel 7 in Little Rock Arkansas, died Saturday. She was only 26 years old. She was found badly beaten in her home. It is an open investigation. My heart goes out to her friends, colleagues and especially her family.
There are clips and thoughts at the KATV 7 site. Anne Pressly
The good news was that the Saturday Night Live's Weekend Update skit was interrupted by the fact that Amy Poehler was having her baby. The proud parents named their newborn son Archie! Congrats to you all, enjoy the little one! Amy Poehler It was sweet to see Maya Rudolph and Keenan Thompson sing the tribute at the end of the Weekend Update: "We love you Amy, and we can't wait to meet your baby." Sung to the tune of Frankie Valli's "Can't Take My Eyes Off You."
Seth Meyers did a biting piece of Greenspan's grilling on Weekend Update. "He made a mistake." Worth skipping to when they post the episode online!
Now I suppose I'm considered liberal leaning though not always, but am I the only one that can't really see the title "Senator Al Franken from Minnesota?" I just don't know about that. (On the other hand didn't they have wrestler Jesse Ventura for their governer?) And why did Hillary do that ad for Al? I don't exactly get that either. I hope it isn't used against her. I don't mean because she endorsed Al Franken. I mean the "He could be the "60th vote" statement she made. Weird thing to say when Repubs are running ads about how they fear a democratic majority congress with Obama. Oh well, nobody asks me. lol
Hillary for Al
Speaking of political ads, I got such a kick out of this ad I had to post the clip here and share it. It's apparently very real. John Cornyn is an incumbent Senator from Texas up for reelection in November.
Big Bad John from Texas's political ad:
Latest on Republican defection of traitors or Republicans who have come to their senses depending on which side of the fence you're on. Senator Larry Pressier a republican from SD. He's a Vietnam Vet and has now after much thought backed Barack Obamas candidacy. Many of these folk don't really want to vote Democrat but are compelled to. Never seen this before.
Though there were a lot of Reagan democrats if I remember right.
Watched George Stephanopoulos this morning and caught the segment with Jack Welch the former CEO of GE. It got interesting towards the last quarter of the segment. He said things like we shouldn't be fearful, that there is light at the end of the tunnel and that after the next three quarters we'll begin to recuperate because the government is doing the right things. He defends large corporations cutting jobs. Really? I'm getting so sick to death of listening to CEO's of businesses that make mucho moola off the American Working Middle Class and spend it on their own bloated salaries while bitching about profits and unions and taxes... on and on. They are the whiners. It's all bullshit. I hate it. They rarely slash the administration of the corporations or cut back there... if it gets bad they "retire" with bonuses and golden parachutes. Damnable Leeches.
I can't believe the shenanigans going on all over. And I say shenanigans because if I start using the words going through my mind I would still be ranting incoherently two days from now. If you want to view the segment it's here: Jack Welch
Last but not least:I came across a 16 page diatribe from the evangelical group "Focus on the Family.". It's in the form of a letter from "A Christian from 2012 in Obama's America." I read the whole thing, it's pretty odd, with a lot of fearful stuff that, uh, would happen apparently by 2012 with a democratic government.
It's a chore to read, if you feel it's ridiculous but very insightful as far as smear and scare tactics that apparently are the Christian thing to do. Just look at the topics and at least scan the areas you would find interesting as there are many sections, gay marriage, loss of freedoms, guns, abortion, supreme court... it's rather broad. If you're like me you'll find it a bit repugnant as it's not representative of the Christianity I was brought up in. But give it a try. Maybe you'll agree with it all, in which case I'm sorry you would be so scared of an elected official in our democracy. Neither of these men are even close to the anti-Christ. However I recognize your right to believe what you want to. Would you show me the same courtesy please.
Letter from a Christian in 2012
Going to stop talking and make a hot cup of tea.
Probably watch the taped episode of "House" I still haven't gotten to 5 days later.
G'night
Sleep well
At least the election part of the process will be over shortly.

Thirty-three days to E-day... or when will it be nine o'clock?
*
This is what you can do while drinking a cup of hot tea with a little free time to kill in the afternoon and you're bored and thinking about the election. It seemed like a fun idea at the time. Remember when I said we all make gaffes: well, here's the proof!

Three things that strike me:
(1) No matter what hairdo you put on me I still universally hate the way I look.
(2) I forgot to take second photo for glassless ladies... not bored enough to go back & fix it!
(3) These photos might be proof that this election is slowly moving me from the somewhat "different" collumn into the somewhat "crazy" category. In which case I wouldn't know so I guess I'd have to ask my wonderful family if that were indeed the case... on the other hand I'd better not, I know what the answer will be. Ha!

Which one do you like?
If I was to place them in the order that I like the hairdos, I'd pick Hillary, followed by Michelle, Cindy and thenlast but not least Sarah. Don't like anything that reminds me of the bouffant or beehive hairdos... might be a phobia. Hmm.
Will catch you later after the debates.
If I can type with all the twitching I'll probably be doing.
This of course also assumes that there are no more crazy happenings between now and 9 pm... which at this point, nothing ever seems certain so, who knows?
Later,
I must go be more productive.

Palin certainly is polarizing. Is this really a good thing?
I can't help wondering if Obama would have done better with Hillary Clinton on the ticket...
Put an end to this nonsense. Now I guess we'll never know.
Though I have a renewed respect for her fortitude and her campaigning for Barack.
As a politician and as a woman she is light years in front of Palin.
Not to mention that she's a Yale Law School graduate.
So today instead of focusing on the candidates we focused on some of the countries serious issues.
The Stock Market and AIG's distresses following on the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers.
This economic disaster was a (unpleasant) break from the so-called Palinmania we hear about every damn day.
I wish we could stay focused on the issues not the he said- she said drama.
And stop criticizing Tina Fey, she was fantastic as Palin.
It's satire, it's supposed to be a characterization of the real person.
They do it to Bush, and all past presidents.
It's not like Hillary's depiction was all that flattering either.
But I'm not screeching about it.
Oooo unfair, Oooo awful, Oooo how ever will they survive such parody.
Honey if you can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen. That's political satire get used to it.
Oh and I love the idea that Palin doesn't have to answer the tough questions either simply because she's a woman or
is it simply because the media doesn't always like her (or anyone else it seems all that much).
Oh let's cry about it little girl... let the good old boys protect your lil self.
You call yourself Sarah Barracuda and compare yourself to a pitbull with lipstick and still hide behind the men's shirts.
Give me a break. Give us a real look at who you really are Sarah Pale-in-comparison to Hillary.
Set strong women that can take care of themselves back into the fifties why don't you?
Even Obama has gone on O'Reilly, I suppose you think that was a cake walk, eh?
McCain is a war hero as he takes every moment to tell us again and again...
How exactly will he change the mess his own party has made of things?
And REALLY tell us how he's different cause his answers go so far off track sometimes Bush seems to make sense.
The platform seems to be: Vote for me I'm a POW and the other guy will be bad for you all, besides we got the woman!
This isn't an actual platform.
Somebody start asking the hard questions please. The republicans seem to believe it doesn't matter and that the
questions are unfair to ask the candidates for the highest elected offices in the country. Good God, really?
The presidency of the USA isn't an entitlement program and the republicans deserve the added scrutiny!
Wake up.
Let's see some debates and hope the answers are forced out of them if need be.
There's nothing at stake but our future as a nation and the direction we may go in...
Doesn't sound trivial to me.
This isn't only all about Roe VS Wade, gay rights, racism, sexism or conservative VS liberals. Those are red flag issues designed to distract us from the things that could in theory put our country and it's world position in jeopardy.
It's about everyone's rights, future military policy, education, competitiveness in a global market, dependence on oil, creating green technology, the sinking middle class, mortgage crisis, job losses, inadequate health care, declining cutting edge technology, and the economy. ie: the future.
We deserve better than this nonsense.
A democracy means WE the PEOPLE have the RIGHT to ask questions and to have them answered honestly.
Not with sarcasm, untruths, diversion, avoidance and distraction.
Both sides need to start straight talking, one side has done more than the other so far anyway.
Who's tossing around words like: arrogance and elitism?
And would someone explain to me what exactly "small town values" are?
I imagine it depends where you live but I thought it meant coming to each others aid with a supportive and caring community. Reaching out to those in need and attempting to understand and value differences as well as similarities.
Was I wrong?

We need far more straight talk and less spin then we're getting.
I have many unanswered questions for the candidates.
I'm hoping they will get around to them very soon.
I'm going to attempt here to explain how incredibly discouraging I find the current election.
Actually I've been unhappy with the last 20 years or so with our political system.
I've been reading and listening to both sides of the spectrum and those in between for quite a while now.
If you want to get a clearer idea of the political machine as it is in the USA you have to understand the issues.
Listening to Republican, independent and Democratic concepts and policy beliefs is essential.
Everyone can stay one sided and stick with one parties rhetoric and block out the others.
No party or person is ever completely right.
I listen regularly to BBC, FOX, CNN and PBS news as well as read newspapers and magazines.
My regulars run the gamut from Bill O'Reilly to Bill Maher, Jon Stewart, Chris Matthews and Brokaw to Limbaugh, Hannity and I've even listened to Coulter ("If I must" of course.)
Honestly I'm a Democrat because I want to vote in the primaries.
I was a strong Hillary Clinton supporter and moved to Obama because of the extreme conservatism of the
McCain/Palin ticket. As a country I believe we must not cross the lines of separation of church and state.
I do not see Sarah Palin as a qualified presidential candidate.
I was a stay at home mother of four and this was very difficult at times for us, I also managed recently to go back to school at NYU and get my master's degree in Social Work... (would you like to make fun of or belittle my life experiences here?) The kids went almost everywhere I did before they went to school. I do not get a gold star because I had four children.
I don't find abortion a pleasant thing but I do not believe I have the right to force someone to have a baby they
can't support or want. I resent the part of the religious right that feels they have the right to control others beliefs on this subject. Forcing a woman or young girl to have a baby that is the result of incest, rape or is severely disabled without compassion for the unique situation of each mother... does not belong in our laws. There are certain situations that even I would consider an abortion... would it be in my family's interest (remember family values) to risk my life if having a baby would threaten my life and take away their mother?
Sex education and availability of birth control would be preventative for pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.
Seems to me that many conservatives point to birth control as causing promiscuity when in reality unplanned pregnancies are common without birth control being available. Also the divorce rate isn't any better across the board.
If abortion is outlawed and considered a crime then what's next?
Will you arrest a woman that drinks while pregnant, jail one that is a drug addict?
Charge a woman with murder if she miscarries because of one of these issues?
The wealthy will always have options (even illegal ones) that the more "common folk" won't.
If you believe in creationism, I don't have a problem with you at all. I do not believe the same things.
And that's okay. But creationism doesn't belong in the public school system.
I'm a supporter of our troops wherever they are. They're engaging in an amazing service for their country.
This does not mean I'm unpatriotic if I do not and have not from the start been in favor of invading Iraq.
This country was founded on freedom of speech and freedom to disagree.
I'm proud that John McCain had such a service record in Vietnam and am sorry that he had to endure such pain as a POW. There are unfortunately many that were permanently disabled, severely injured or captured during that same war. Many others gave the ultimate sacrifice to their country when they were killed in the line of duty.
Again I respect and admire Senator McCain for this service and all he went through on his journey back to home,
but I do not respect the policies he offers to fix our national debt or improve our general condition (when we can get details of exactly what it is he stands for besides just saying Obama would be bad for the country.)
I'm truly hoping some of the debates have some hardball questions for the candidates.
I beg the reporters to take off their gloves and ask the questions that matter to our existance as a world power in the future. Screeching distractions about sexism, ageism, racism is just a detraction from the important issues.
We should ask them hard questions and demand adequate answers not just the same old rehashed beans.
And they should continue debating until all the questions listed are answered completely.
No interrupting each other and no long drawn out nonsense... if they're off track bring them back to the question at hand. No more circular reasoning, back to the beginning and nothing is really said.
The answer to these most serious problems in this country is NOT that the other guy will be a bad choice.
I don't care if Palin is a woman or not, hey, try treating her the way Hillary was treated often enough.
Take off the gloves and demand that these candidates tell us how they are TRULY different from each other and this current debacle of an administration. Demand sensible answers and solutions. Details, it's in the details NOT the hype. The negativity is just bullshit all around.
I don't care that McCain is a war vet or that Biden has been a career politician or that Obama is more liberal or black.
I care about who will bring our country into the inevitable global future. Who will deal with our economic issues, the energy crisis, the slipping of jobs overseas, loss of jobs here at home and inadequate healthcare coverage of our people. The rising cost of educating our children, going to college. Getting us out of the middle east and keeping us safer at home. We must fix our educational system all around, before our intelligence and technical ability is eclipsed by other countries who are becoming more educated and innovative every year. What the hell are we waiting for?
We cannot afford financially the war in Iraq or the loss of more military personnel (even if we had a draft) to fight every perceived threat in this world. We are not an isolated country nor are we guaranteed a place in global economy simply because we are from the United States. The internet doesn't allow for us treading water forever.
I got very upset when the choice of Sarah Palin was made primarily because she was a woman and only because the Democrats didn't choose Hillary. How cynical. Yes, she's a woman, so am I, so what?
And for a political party that howled that about Barack Obama's celebrity, the ones that launched the negative ad juxtaposing his image with Paris Hilton and Britany Spears (could they really believe he's anything like those vapid examples of women?) It doesn't seem to bother them now that McCain is taking a back seat to Palin signing posters and getting the attention. They affectionately call it Palinmania. Are they running McCain or Palin?
The hypocrisy in this presidential election runs deep. It's discouraging to see this country deliberately torn apart gleefully for political gain.
And speaking of hypocrisy... Joe Lieberman should be run out of Washington and please take Rudy Gulliani with you Joe...
I'm from NY and I once liked Rudy, but seriously. Could he possibly be more obnoxious by ridiculing "cosmopolitan" and "community organizers" in the same breath? How dare you, I found that both hypocritical and elitist at the same time if were going to name call. Thanks Rudy, I'm so proud of that speech. If that didn't offend every social worker out there in the trenches trying to make a difference across this country, then I'm not sure what would. Give me a break.
I completely resent the implication of being called elitist? Why would I be seen as elitist? Because I'm educated and a social worker, or because I live in a very small town of around 1000 people or simply because I live in New York State where 9-11 hit so very hard?
I can't imagine any leader from the mayor (or governer) of NYC up to the president of the country not stepping up to his job in light of the attacks of 9-ll. Everyone stepped up to the plate and was supportive and helped out including our leaders. Would we expect anything less? Now we're throwing all goodwill to the side in this election?
Listen to all the candidates carefully. To what they say they believe and what they plan to do, then make a considered and informed decision on which candidate for president will make the best choices on the future of our country. Consider the issues that are vital to the country not just the standard camouflaging of them with hot button/red flag issues. There are no red or blue states, just majority leanings. It's a close race in most of the states and every state is made up of people neither red or blue just Americans. It's a deliberate polarization of the people yet again.
The issues have nothing to do with whether there is a woman, war veteran, black man or white man running for office.
It disturbed me that McCain pandered to the NASCAR crowds in New Hampshire today saying " “Thank you NASCAR for your support of the men and women who are serving our nation in uniform around the world.” Okay.
The other thing he recently said: "You know that there's been tremendous turmoil in our financial markets and Wall St. And it is -- people are frightened by these events. Our economy, I think still -- the fundamentals of our economy are strong. But these are very, very difficult times." Fundamentals?
I find this an understatement given the mortgage crisis, failure of banks and todays failure of Lehman Brothers.
Seriously John, that's it? Barack you want to add some more to this?
I'm remembering our $800 a month almost unaffordable oil bills last winter and here we go again...
Is the answer drilling for more oil and building more nuclear power plants that won't help us realistically for many, many years? Or are we going to seriously work on renewable and green energy to free us?
I picture JFK rolling in his grave with all this bull... with his leadership we went to the moon and suddenly now
we can't do anything more remarkable than "drill baby drill." How sad for us.
This country is great because of it's democracy not necessarily because of unbridled greed of extreme capitalism.
I invite discourse here. I'll try to post every day until our election of a new president in November.
Do not waste anyone's time by name calling or belittling anyones beliefs.
No one will reunite our country by denying we're all different and all our opinions valuable.
I'm sorry that this post was so very long. But I have a lot to say.
There's so much going on in this election it's amazing. I wish more of it was in a good spirit.
G'night everyone
