As I've said before, I relax on Sundays and catch up on the news both written and video that I've missed.
And tucked between the endless "news" tales of the "villainous" Octomom and Rush Limbore's emphatic ill-spoken rantings...
was a little jem that was like a visit from an unwelcome ghost of winter's past.
The clip most definitely inspired a SNL Seth Meyers "REALLY!?!" moment for me... but to quote her own phrase "What the hell was she thinking?"
The only person pulling a Harding there is Tonya herself.

I fell behind on this week's news, so I'm spending the evening digging. Putting on my hip boots, work gloves and grabbing the shovel... or maybe the pitch fork- to get through the endless loops of same s**t different day news stories... sifting for truth.
Can't watch another economy based show or my head will explode today. I just can't. My mind is in a full blown recession that hopefully won't turn into a depression anytime in the near future. Will rejuvenate my mood tomorrow night at the Bill Maher/Ann Coulter speaker series at Radio City Music Hall in the city. Probably sold out now. Should be a real pip.

A dozen days left of BushLite's presidency: What no roses?

Well now we're looking at Congress' typically twisted way of showing bipartisanship... Republicans acting like democrats and democrats acting like republicans. Which by the way gets us no further along on the road to agreement or unity at all.
The question is not who's on what side; it's who's going to work with Obama.
Please make Reid stop talking before he thinks things through, actually let that be a model for them all.
Reid's still holding out on seating Burris on a technicality about a signature on his paperwork. Though everyone has pretty much stated directly or indirectly at this point that he will be seated.
I'm still thinking that Blago isn't going to jail after all the dust clears... unless there's more we haven't heard yet, because I think they jumped the gun this time. We'll see eh? They probably will remove him from office though if they can manage to.
Reid needs to stop talking. I expect the republicans to express skepticism about Obama but Reid says he's not going to simply go along with Obama... blah, blah, blah, stop talking... Jeeze Reid, Obama's not even president yet.
So Reid defends his position against Burris on his incredible principles (fear of the spread of "taint") but gives a speech that praises Ted Stevens for hisindictment on seven federal counts of years of service.
And it's interesting that Sarah Palin is on the whine again about the unfair treatment of her and her family by the liberal leaning press. And how Caroline Kennedy is getting a free ride from the media... now surely you jest Ms Gov Palin? The press is happily crucifying Caroline. She isn't getting any free ride. Her pedigree has been picked at, her experience criticized, even her speech has been mimicked by commentators, pundits and (golly gee) late night talk hosts.
You know, someone, um, called her diction "valley girl" style, like you know, um... yea.
Then again, Palin wouldn't know a cause to be sympathetic if it jumped up and bit her in the ass 'cause, she's being that the only one criticized that is out there and so it seems to make her crazy, you betcha.
I still can't get the image of a giant Putin rearing his head over the Alaskan tundra. AAAaarrrgggghhhhh!!!

Did you remember that the SNL cartoon "The Ambiguously Gay Duo" was voiced by Steve Carell and Steve Colbert? You can see one of the cartoons here but remember I said it was funny tasteless... Fifty-three days left of George W Bush... Black Friday.

I don't go shopping on Black Friday (or Thanksgiving Thursday).
Crazed consumerism isn't consistent with a time of family gathering for a relaxing and Thankful holiday at all.
I understand wanting to save money, but running around trying to beat everyone else to the holy grail isn't my idea of fun.
No tv, game console, computer is worth standing in line at Best Buy from 7pm Thanksgiving night to 5am the next morning...
I guess I don't make a good shopper. I'd rather shop online or shop less crazed times for sales.
This year a Long Island Walmart had a death at it's Valley Stream store.
People rushed into the store knocking down and trampling a 34 year old worker who died.
They also knocked down a pregnant woman that had to go to the hospital.
This is utter insanity, no material item is worth someone's death. It's scary to me how crowds of people act.
Crowd mentality. First come first served. Everybody for themselves.
Black Friday doesn't bring out the best in people.
My family lived in Valley Stream a long time ago. I was born nearby and then we moved when I was 6 months old.

Still don't even know what we're going to do come Feb when tv goes digital.
We're one of the last few die hard antenna people that don't have cable and have lived quite well without it and another monthly bill.
I guess we'll have to go cable or satellite but I'll hate doing it.
Honestly I'm tempted to just use the computer, but everything isn't available free online for tv. Sigh.
I'd do without but doubt the kids would be happy with that. We have some time anyway.
Don't even know which would be better or cheaper for that matter: satellite or cable.
Still updates to the Mumbai, India terrorist attack. It seems that the attack is over but the final information isn't released yet.
There are at least 150 people dead and many more injured. It's so sad that people are able to treat others so callously.
If humans spent as much effort getting along and working together rather than plotting to kill people that don't agree with them or look different from them the world would be a much better and safer place for everyone.
A child of 12 does not deserve to die in such a manner. A premeditated act of violence... that proves what?
Is everyone's God so different that this is justifiable behavior?
Is "peace on earth good will to men" such an unobtainable possibility?

Two Days until E-Day.

I'm sitting here tonight with a heating pad on my neck wrapped in a blanket with a hot cup of tea.
Have the makings of a good cold right now and am hoping to beat it back.
Waiting for the SNL appearance of John McCain before packing it in for tonight.
I wish that Sarah Palin would shut up about the constitution, she clearly doesn't have a clue what it actually says.
She seems to think that she can criticize Barack Obama's associations and that's her right but when reporters of the media criticize her or the McCain negative campaigning THAT threatens her freedom of speech. Amazing.

The first Amendment of the Constitution:
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."
Sarah seems to believe that the Obama campaign is just as negative as McCain's. Yet they have left McCain's relationship with Keating 5 or G Gordon Liddy out of their speeches. They have left her especially alone despite the relationship with a certain secessionsist party, or a particularly unusual religious leader... and some legal issues. No I'd say that the Obama campaign isn't doing the same thing, they're trying to be inclusive of people that don't necessarily agree with them, not name calling, or trying to scare the hell out of people for no good reason. There is a high road and a low road.
I guess to Palin the end does justify the means.
That's a dangerous concept to believe in.
Fear and hatred aren't easily controlled once let loose.
One of my favorite quotes is from the tv show Dr. Who:
"You know, the very powerful and the very stupid have one thing in common. They don't alter their views to fit the facts. They alter the facts to fit their views. Which can be uncomfortable if you happen to be one of the facts that need altering."
That quote is what the first amendment is trying to protect us against.
Hey, Sarah, facts don't need to be altered.
I guess the constitution of the USA must protect you too because you're still unmuzzled ain't ya?

Tina Fey as Palin stepping aside for a moment and "going rogue" with her Palin 2012 t-shirts, not to be worn until after Tues.
(I'm either gonna run for office or I'm gonna be a white Oprah...)
Have to give McCain some credit for doing the show. Don't know that it'll matter but... still.
Spoof on the View was good too. Joy and Elizabeth. Ben as "Alec" and Jennifer. Whoopie. Ha.
I If I can remain awake I'll have to watch the rest of the show.
Finally the light at the end of the... Wait: can it be a spoof of Keith Olbermann's Countdown?
Wow it seems that the election has woken up the writers at SNL...
Too bad that it'll likely go back to it's normal mediocrity after the election, eh?

Nine days to E-Day... Finally we're in the single digits!!!

There was good news and bad news this weekend.
First the bad news:
Anne Pressly, anchorwoman for Channel 7 in Little Rock Arkansas, died Saturday. She was only 26 years old. She was found badly beaten in her home. It is an open investigation. My heart goes out to her friends, colleagues and especially her family.

The good news was that the Saturday Night Live's Weekend Update skit was interrupted by the fact that Amy Poehler was having her baby. The proud parents named their newborn son Archie! Congrats to you all, enjoy the little one! Amy Poehler It was sweet to see Maya Rudolph and Keenan Thompson sing the tribute at the end of the Weekend Update: "We love you Amy, and we can't wait to meet your baby." Sung to the tune of Frankie Valli's "Can't Take My Eyes Off You."
Seth Meyers did a biting piece of Greenspan's grilling on Weekend Update. "He made a mistake." Worth skipping to when they post the episode online!
Now I suppose I'm considered liberal leaning though not always, but am I the only one that can't really see the title "Senator Al Franken from Minnesota?" I just don't know about that. (On the other hand didn't they have wrestler Jesse Ventura for their governer?) And why did Hillary do that ad for Al? I don't exactly get that either. I hope it isn't used against her. I don't mean because she endorsed Al Franken. I mean the "He could be the "60th vote" statement she made. Weird thing to say when Repubs are running ads about how they fear a democratic majority congress with Obama. Oh well, nobody asks me. lol

Speaking of political ads, I got such a kick out of this ad I had to post the clip here and share it. It's apparently very real. John Cornyn is an incumbent Senator from Texas up for reelection in November.

Latest on Republican defection of traitors or Republicans who have come to their senses depending on which side of the fence you're on. Senator Larry Pressier a republican from SD. He's a Vietnam Vet and has now after much thought backed Barack Obamas candidacy. Many of these folk don't really want to vote Democrat but are compelled to. Never seen this before.
Though there were a lot of Reagan democrats if I remember right.
Watched George Stephanopoulos this morning and caught the segment with Jack Welch the former CEO of GE. It got interesting towards the last quarter of the segment. He said things like we shouldn't be fearful, that there is light at the end of the tunnel and that after the next three quarters we'll begin to recuperate because the government is doing the right things. He defends large corporations cutting jobs. Really? I'm getting so sick to death of listening to CEO's of businesses that make mucho moola off the American Working Middle Class and spend it on their own bloated salaries while bitching about profits and unions and taxes... on and on. They are the whiners. It's all bullshit. I hate it. They rarely slash the administration of the corporations or cut back there... if it gets bad they "retire" with bonuses and golden parachutes. Damnable Leeches.
I can't believe the shenanigans going on all over. And I say shenanigans because if I start using the words going through my mind I would still be ranting incoherently two days from now. If you want to view the segment it's here: Jack Welch
Last but not least:I came across a 16 page diatribe from the evangelical group "Focus on the Family.". It's in the form of a letter from "A Christian from 2012 in Obama's America." I read the whole thing, it's pretty odd, with a lot of fearful stuff that, uh, would happen apparently by 2012 with a democratic government.
It's a chore to read, if you feel it's ridiculous but very insightful as far as smear and scare tactics that apparently are the Christian thing to do. Just look at the topics and at least scan the areas you would find interesting as there are many sections, gay marriage, loss of freedoms, guns, abortion, supreme court... it's rather broad. If you're like me you'll find it a bit repugnant as it's not representative of the Christianity I was brought up in. But give it a try. Maybe you'll agree with it all, in which case I'm sorry you would be so scared of an elected official in our democracy. Neither of these men are even close to the anti-Christ. However I recognize your right to believe what you want to. Would you show me the same courtesy please.

To be honest, right now I'm cutting up 12 cups of onion, celery and carrots
to put in my huge pot of homemade chicken soup (for the soul)...
Then I have chicken to cut and noodles to cook.
I'll be done in a couple of hours or so.
Why do I make my own soups?
One because I can make a huge pot for the family at once that lasts for a while.
Two because it's a whole lot cheaper than the canned stuff and tastes great and is better for you.
But mostly it's because my son says that he likes it better than the canned stuff.
Gotta love him.
So I'll be back later... I promise.

Back... House smells like yummy simmering soup. Mmmm.
Today I feel bad for old "Joe the Plumber" only because if he hadn't gotten caught on camera (and there are lots of theories on why he was) he wouldn't be under all this scrutiny. People fighting and name calling all over the comments pages about Joe and the fairness or unfairness of it all.
Repubs howling that the dems and the media are being unfair and it's because of his "gotcha" Obama question and the liberal media trying to create a scene...
Well, let's see. A lot of discrepancy in what Joe (or Sam as the case may be) told to Obama, which to Obama's credit he stayed to try to discuss the question he was asked. I feel a little bit sorry about the attention (some rather negative) that Joe's getting but it's no less than any of us would get in the same instance. Maybe he'll write a book later on...
What it does illustrate to me is that it's a national epidemic to not exactly tell the truth anymore. That's the sad part.
If it was an honest straightforward question this whole thing wouldn't have happened would it "Joe?"
Wonder if he wishes he framed the question a bit differently about now?
As I said before I taught my kids to tell the truth, because then you don't have to worry about a "Joe the Plumber" moment.
I said a lie is a lie and the truth is the truth. Silly me trying to pass on family values... what was I thinking?

Acorn isn't a huge deal really. And they benefit both candidates anyway.

What is a big deal is the way it's being set up to challenge the election results.
We should be worrying about the real possibility of actual voter fraud.
Voter registration fraud isn't the same thing... If Mickey Mouse gets registered he'd have to be able to vote for it to matter.
The computer voting units can be a problem and with a large amount of them there's no paper trail.
PBS and You Tube are partnered for video your vote to document problems people have at the polls across the US.
I don't see how they could steal this election, but honestly it does make me rather nervous.
Gonna go to bed shortly ) It's 2am now and I have things I have to do tomorrow.
So I'm putting the politics to bed for tonight now.
Tina Fey was on Letterman tonight and she was fun to listen to.
I hear Sarah Palin will be on SNL (no real secret) tomorrow night. I'll have to catch it.
Haven't watched a whole SNL show in a long time, though I do watch the "Weekend Update" segment if I remember to
and can catch it during the show or online.

Thirty (gasp) six days to E-Day, Couric, SNL and buy (uh, bail) out.

First off, yes I missed a day. Well I didn't actually miss it, it was like any other day but I didn't get to post here.
Countdown day Thirty-seven was spent watching, reading, and talking about the news, barbecuing steak and visiting mom.
***Addendum to Tuesday Sept. 29, 2008: No bail out. Falling stocks. Everybody blaming the other guy (a national passtime.)

Caught SNL's Tina Fey and Amy Poehler spoof of the Katie Couric interview.
Best line: "Katie I'd like to use one of my lifelines."
Second best: "...or Bono the king of Ireland."
So the thing is that the SNL skit was amusing and mocking (which they do well when they actually get it right)
but the real Couric-Palin interview wasn't nearly so funny because it was real.
Waiting for that Biden/Palin debate, should be interesting if nothing else.
Joe, just answer the questions succinctly, and let her talk herself into a hole.
Don't waste your time getting angry, stick to the facts and keep it short... none of those verbose, run on, more info than you need answers... you won't need them here.
Follow Courics lead. "Say why do you feel that is true..." Practice not looking like you're astonished or think she's a complete dimwit in front of the mirror. Get botox if that's what it takes but seriously Joe, talk to her don't mock her, let her try to explain what the hell she means. Give them enough rope and they will hang themselves.
But do make her answer the questions not just say repetitively John McCain is right and Obama is the antichrist....
I'm happy to see that even some (though not as many as you would hope) of the republicans are questioning Palin finally.

Still struck by the fact that McCain chose Palin in the first place. How well did he even know her?

What did he then choose her on? Her cuteness, her voice, her overall wealth and depth of knowledge? Honesty?
On the other hand, if he chose her because he really did research, know her and thought she'd be make the best damn VP he could find...
What does that say? That's even more disturbing to me. If he really DID believe she was the best choice then I can't follow his logic at all. I suspect it was a bit more cynical... Obama picked a man, I'm going to pick a woman, BUT tell me seriously that there wasn't any more knowledgeable, prepared republican woman out there in the pool to pick from.
I would think most of the professional working women out there (especially on capitol hill) cringed at the end of the first part of the Couric interview. She asked Sarah "I'm just going to ask you one more time, not to belabor the point, for specific examples in his (McCain) 26 years of pushing for more regulations"
Answer: "I'll try to find ya some and I'll bring em to ya."
I twitched at that point as I have so many times during this election.
I didn't know whether to laugh out loud or throw things at the tv. How could this be possible?
Not only haven't I ever seen anything like this cardboard cut out of a woman but Bush might actually be smarter than her
and that's scary by itself. We've seen what danger there is to having someone in the office that doesn't understand the finer details needed to run the government produces.
But as I said my respect for party line republicans has gone down. This shouldn't have happened.
Still not terribly excited about either of the candidates, but won't vote for McCain and Palin is out of the question.

The other side of the news: The economic bail out will it happen? There's a plan: Dems and Repubs might pass it in the house... maybe.
I think this whole thing stinks. I don't know enough about all the different degrees or dynamics of economics, but I'm trying to figure it out to best of my ability. Small background in Economic anthropology, Marxist anthropology and Comparison of ancient economic theories. But that was a while ago and some of my hardest classes.
I'm not convinced this is going to work. I think if the problem was caught earlier we could have gotten together an econmic think tank, brain storming summit and really figured out a workable far more comprehensive plan to address this problem.
It's a bit late now. Maybe we can avert total meltdown but that doesn't mean this will be at all pleasant.
In fairness there were people screaming about this quite some time ago but they were ignored.
This country isn't run on industry as much as magic money. Yes, credit is necessary but not like this.
Everybody seems to think the government is bad and that regulation is equally bad but... you simply can't expect any company to regulate itself if the goal of the system is ultimately pure capitalism.
Extreme capitalism without restraint creates abuse of power, people and money.
It does need some regulation especially when it's success or failure can change the future of the very country it exists in.
Capitalism, market economy, and democracy are three different things.
At the risk of sounding naggy... Americans need to stop buying into the bastardized version of the American Dream.
My parents philosophy was simple: if you didn't really need it you didn't buy it. If you didn't have the money for it you definitely didn't buy it. The only thing you could borrow money for was a home or a car, maybe college but you were expected to work. You avoided overextending yourself and here's the missing part: the banks didn't approve of giving out risky loans.
We've done it too. We owe too much money. Wish we didn't but we're working on it.
George Carlin might have said it the best:
"They call it the American Dream for a reason...
You have to be asleep to believe it."
Everyone buys so much stuff they don't need. Computers, ipods, clothes, cars, jewelry... tvs, expensive cable, cell phone plans... on and on. It's to the point that whole industries depend on our need to have all this junk so if we were to stop buying it there's a huge problem. But a lot of these items aren't even made in this country anymore. the profit is made by a company who produces something overseas, imports it here and then makes a profit selling it to Americans.
The whole system is bad and we've been running on borrowed time for quite a while now.
Still trying to decide if this bail out is a good idea or not. I wish it wasn't let go until it was a real impending disaster.
