Oh what a year!
Scandals like John Edwards, Elliot Spitzer and the latest of course: Rod Blagojevich.
Notables: Sarah Palin and Tina Fey, Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and John McCain, the Dalai Lama, Paul Krugman, and almost anyone except Joe the Plumber.
People I will miss: Eartha Kitt, Issac Hayes, Heath Ledger, Bo Diddley, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, Jim McKay, Paul Newman, Sidney Pollack, William F. Buckley, Bobby Fischer and Suzanne Pleshette.
This isn't a thorough list of those we lost in 2008, there were many. The two I will definitely miss the most: Tim Russert, the moderator of Meet the Press and George Carlin, a great comedian and social commentator.
There were many disasters ranging from the earthquake in Sichuan Providence, China; terrorist attacks in Mumbai, India; Israeli/Hamas/Gaza strip crisis to the cyclone that hit Myanmar. A tough year for many places in the world. The USA had floods, hurricanes, fires, tornados, ice storms and those are just the "natural" disasters.
Best line of 2008:
A Sarah Palin response in the Katie Couric interviews: "As Putin rears his head and comes into the air space of the United States of America, where do they go? It's Alaska. It's just right over the border. It is from Alaska that we send those out to make sure that an eye is being kept on this very powerful nation, Russia, because they are right there, they are right next to our state."
All I remember saying to myself after that response was "Wow that sounds like a really bad sci-fi movie." Then laughing later when SNL with Tina Fey had fun with that one.
There were some good tv shows (think House or CSI) and bad ones (like Do Not Disturb).
Music had a good year not a great one, but in 2008 Chinese Democracy was released finally despite Axl Rose.
Movies: Iron Man with Robert Downey Jr., The Dark Knight with Heath Ledger as the Joker, and of course WALL-E.
The Bush presidency draws to a close after the 2008 election of Barack Obama for the next four years.
The economy craters, Madoff scams, Paulsen bails out some banks, and Letterman and McCain make nice again.
Angelina and Brad are still together so all must be on the right track for the future... right?
But with no regard to humans, time continues to march on and once again the Holiday season draws to a close and a new year begins.
There is still great possibility for 2009.
Let's all come together and require our elected officials to get to work.
We need them to pay more attention to the needs of our country and begin problem solving instead of creating new problems.
Happy New Year everyone.
Stay safe and sane.
I shall have a quiet night nursing my horrible cold.
G'night
Laura

Eighteen days to E-Day... or starting to see the light at the end of this tunnel.
*
To be honest, right now I'm cutting up 12 cups of onion, celery and carrots
to put in my huge pot of homemade chicken soup (for the soul)...
Then I have chicken to cut and noodles to cook.
I'll be done in a couple of hours or so.
Why do I make my own soups?
One because I can make a huge pot for the family at once that lasts for a while.
Two because it's a whole lot cheaper than the canned stuff and tastes great and is better for you.
But mostly it's because my son says that he likes it better than the canned stuff.
Gotta love him.
So I'll be back later... I promise.
******
Back... House smells like yummy simmering soup. Mmmm.
Today I feel bad for old "Joe the Plumber" only because if he hadn't gotten caught on camera (and there are lots of theories on why he was) he wouldn't be under all this scrutiny. People fighting and name calling all over the comments pages about Joe and the fairness or unfairness of it all.
Repubs howling that the dems and the media are being unfair and it's because of his "gotcha" Obama question and the liberal media trying to create a scene...
Well, let's see. A lot of discrepancy in what Joe (or Sam as the case may be) told to Obama, which to Obama's credit he stayed to try to discuss the question he was asked. I feel a little bit sorry about the attention (some rather negative) that Joe's getting but it's no less than any of us would get in the same instance. Maybe he'll write a book later on...
What it does illustrate to me is that it's a national epidemic to not exactly tell the truth anymore. That's the sad part.
If it was an honest straightforward question this whole thing wouldn't have happened would it "Joe?"
Wonder if he wishes he framed the question a bit differently about now?
As I said before I taught my kids to tell the truth, because then you don't have to worry about a "Joe the Plumber" moment.
I said a lie is a lie and the truth is the truth. Silly me trying to pass on family values... what was I thinking?
******
Acorn isn't a huge deal really. And they benefit both candidates anyway.
(McCain failed to mention he was a speaker at an ACORN sponsored event in "06)
What is a big deal is the way it's being set up to challenge the election results.
We should be worrying about the real possibility of actual voter fraud.
Voter registration fraud isn't the same thing... If Mickey Mouse gets registered he'd have to be able to vote for it to matter.
The computer voting units can be a problem and with a large amount of them there's no paper trail.
PBS and You Tube are partnered for video your vote to document problems people have at the polls across the US.
I don't see how they could steal this election, but honestly it does make me rather nervous.
Gonna go to bed shortly ) It's 2am now and I have things I have to do tomorrow.
So I'm putting the politics to bed for tonight now.
Tina Fey was on Letterman tonight and she was fun to listen to.
I hear Sarah Palin will be on SNL (no real secret) tomorrow night. I'll have to catch it.
Haven't watched a whole SNL show in a long time, though I do watch the "Weekend Update" segment if I remember to
and can catch it during the show or online.
G'night all,
Feeling good about the election drawing nearer and nearer finally!

Palin certainly is polarizing. Is this really a good thing?
I can't help wondering if Obama would have done better with Hillary Clinton on the ticket...
Put an end to this nonsense. Now I guess we'll never know.
Though I have a renewed respect for her fortitude and her campaigning for Barack.
As a politician and as a woman she is light years in front of Palin.
Not to mention that she's a Yale Law School graduate.
So today instead of focusing on the candidates we focused on some of the countries serious issues.
The Stock Market and AIG's distresses following on the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers.
This economic disaster was a (unpleasant) break from the so-called Palinmania we hear about every damn day.
I wish we could stay focused on the issues not the he said- she said drama.
And stop criticizing Tina Fey, she was fantastic as Palin.
It's satire, it's supposed to be a characterization of the real person.
They do it to Bush, and all past presidents.
It's not like Hillary's depiction was all that flattering either.
But I'm not screeching about it.
Oooo unfair, Oooo awful, Oooo how ever will they survive such parody.
Honey if you can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen. That's political satire get used to it.
Oh and I love the idea that Palin doesn't have to answer the tough questions either simply because she's a woman or
is it simply because the media doesn't always like her (or anyone else it seems all that much).
Oh let's cry about it little girl... let the good old boys protect your lil self.
You call yourself Sarah Barracuda and compare yourself to a pitbull with lipstick and still hide behind the men's shirts.
Give me a break. Give us a real look at who you really are Sarah Pale-in-comparison to Hillary.
Set strong women that can take care of themselves back into the fifties why don't you?
Even Obama has gone on O'Reilly, I suppose you think that was a cake walk, eh?
McCain is a war hero as he takes every moment to tell us again and again...
How exactly will he change the mess his own party has made of things?
And REALLY tell us how he's different cause his answers go so far off track sometimes Bush seems to make sense.
The platform seems to be: Vote for me I'm a POW and the other guy will be bad for you all, besides we got the woman!
This isn't an actual platform.
Somebody start asking the hard questions please. The republicans seem to believe it doesn't matter and that the
questions are unfair to ask the candidates for the highest elected offices in the country. Good God, really?
The presidency of the USA isn't an entitlement program and the republicans deserve the added scrutiny!
Wake up.
Let's see some debates and hope the answers are forced out of them if need be.
There's nothing at stake but our future as a nation and the direction we may go in...
Doesn't sound trivial to me.
This isn't only all about Roe VS Wade, gay rights, racism, sexism or conservative VS liberals. Those are red flag issues designed to distract us from the things that could in theory put our country and it's world position in jeopardy.
It's about everyone's rights, future military policy, education, competitiveness in a global market, dependence on oil, creating green technology, the sinking middle class, mortgage crisis, job losses, inadequate health care, declining cutting edge technology, and the economy. ie: the future.
We deserve better than this nonsense.
A democracy means WE the PEOPLE have the RIGHT to ask questions and to have them answered honestly.
Not with sarcasm, untruths, diversion, avoidance and distraction.
Both sides need to start straight talking, one side has done more than the other so far anyway.
Who's tossing around words like: arrogance and elitism?
And would someone explain to me what exactly "small town values" are?
I imagine it depends where you live but I thought it meant coming to each others aid with a supportive and caring community. Reaching out to those in need and attempting to understand and value differences as well as similarities.
Was I wrong?
G'night
